Document display case in Leinster House

The Oireachtas Library & Research Service is exhibiting a copy of the report of the 1848 trial of William Smith O’Brien for high treason.

William Smith O’Brien was a passionate advocate of repeal of the Act of Union in the House of Commons. He joined Daniel O’Connell’s Repeal Association but later split from it and began to recruit supporters for an armed rebellion.

The display coincides with the 170th anniversary of the Young Irelander rebellion.
