Finance Committee to Begin Intensive Consultation by Meeting with Finance Minister, Financial Regulator and Central Bank Governor

26 Lún 2011, 12:18

Committee will also meet with Heads of Banks and Commissioner Rehn

26th  August 2011

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance and Public Service will kick off a series of intensive consultative meetings next week when Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD; Governor of the Central Bank, Prof Patrick Honohon and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Matthew Elderfield appear at the Committee.

Minister Noonan will attend the Committee on Thursday, (1st) at 10 am while Professor Honohon and Mr Elderfield will appear on Friday (2nd) at 10 am.

Over the coming weeks, the Committee will be conducting a rigorous consultation process with all the main players in the field of domestic and European finance. It has secured the agreement from the heads of NAMA, the NTMA, BOI and AIB to attend the Committee. The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD and EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Ollie Rehn will also attend upcoming meetings.

Committee Chairman, Alex White TD said;
“At a crucial time for the Irish economy, the Committee plans to establish a thorough and in-depth picture of the present condition of the Irish financial system. In order to do this, we have arranged meetings with all the main protagonists from both Ireland and Europe.

At these meetings we want to ascertain the precise current position in Irish financial institutions. We will also hear from those who regulate them, obtain the Government’s perspective, and establish the view of the EU on Ireland’s economic and financial status.

These introductory sessions will assist the Committee in finalising a meaningful work programme. I hope they will also contribute to public understanding and debate on the current economic and financial climate in the country at a critical time in the budgetary cycle, and in anticipation of the outcome of the forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review.”
