Social Protection Committee to consider recommendations on Child Benefit

19 Márta 2013, 12:13

The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow meets with the Advisory Group on Tax and Social Welfare to discuss its report published last month.

19 March 2013

Chair of the group Ita Mangan will outline the report, which recommended the introduction of a two-tier child benefit system.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy TD says: “We look forward to welcoming Ita Mangan and the Advisory Group on Tax and Social Welfare to our Committee meeting tomorrow afternoon. The report by the Group recommends a universal child benefit payment for all, with top-up payments available to those most in need. On publication of the report last month, Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton requested that our Committee considers its recommendations.

“This is a complex and sensitive area which warrants detailed and careful debate. The report points to measures which specifically target low income families in order to reduce poverty. Bearing in mind the on-going pressures on middle income households, our Committee will wish to advance discussion and explore options on this hugely important policy area which impacts significantly on families across the country.”

The public session of this meeting takes place from 1pm tomorrow Wednesday 20 March in Committee Room 3, LH 2000.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
