EU Affairs Committee to consider the Rule of Law with Hungarian Ambassador

8 DFómh 2014, 14:35

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow engage with Hungary’s Ambassador to Ireland, Dr Tamás Magyarics, on his government’s approach to the Rule of Law.

8 October 2014

The Joint Committee began its consideration of this issue on Tuesday (7 October) with representatives from Transparency International addressing the committee.

A new framework on the Rule of Law, presented by the European Commission earlier this year, sets out to address systemic threats to the rule of law in any of the EU's 28 Member States.

Deputy Hannigan TD says: “The Rule of Law is a fundamental pillar of the European Union. A new Framework on the Rule of Law seeks to allow the European Commission to intervene in the event of serious and systemic threats to the rule of law in a Member State. The meeting follows discussions with representatives of Transparency International on Tuesday, in which issues such as freedom of expression, judicial independence and the legislative approach of the current Hungarian Government were raised. The Committee looks forward to engaging with Ambassador Magyarics on some of these concerns at tomorrow’s meeting.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 9 October at 2 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. The meeting will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV (UPC 207 and Sky 574). Public proceedings can also be followed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
