Health Committee to continue consideration of rising costs of medical indemnity insurance

26 Ean 2015, 16:41

The rising costs of professional medical indemnity insurance will be on the agenda of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children tomorrow when legal and patient representatives will appear before the Committee. It follows a meeting on Thursday on the same topic with medical organisations and insurance providers.

26 January 2015

Addressing the Committee tomorrow will be:

  • Michael Boylan, Chairperson, The Medical Injuries Alliance;
  • Kevin O'Higgins, President, Law Society of Ireland;
  • David Barniville SC, Chairman, Bar Council of Ireland, and
  • Ernest Cantillon, Solicitor;
  • Deirdre Courtney, a concerned parent.

Committee Chair Jerry Buttimer TD says: “The rising cost of clinical indemnity insurance is a source of concern to the Committee, particularly given the knock-on impact on wider healthcare costs. On Thursday, we had the opportunity to hear from representatives of medical practitioners, who have seen premium costs for some specialities double in the last two years. Tomorrow, the Committee will gain a fuller understanding of the complex issue by engaging with representatives of the legal profession. We will also hear the perspectives of patients, and in particular, the Medical Injuries Alliance, who advocate for patients injured through medical negligence.”

The meeting will start at 4:30pm in Committee Room 3, LH2000, tomorrow 27 January 2015. Committee proceedings can be viewed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
