Joint Committee on Climate Action to discuss 2030 Target of reducing Carbon Emissions with stakeholders in marine sector

The Joint Committee on Climate Action will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 11 May, to resume discussions on reducing Ireland’s Carbon Emissions by 51 per cent by 2030 with stakeholders from the marine sector.

The meeting at 12.30pm in Committee Room 1 of Leinster House will hear from:

·Dr Simon Berrow, Irish Whale and Dolphin Group;

·         Stephen Kavanagh, Native Oyster Reef Restoration Ireland;

·         Ellen McMahon, The Sustainable Water Network; and

·         Professor Ken Whelan, Research Director, Atlantic Salmon Trust.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Leddin said: “The Committee has agreed to undertake a sector-by-sector analysis to investigate how this reduction can be achieved and we are now considering the agriculture and marine sectors, which account for 35 per cent of Ireland’s total emissions. Within this, Members are also seeking to explore the state of Ireland’s biodiversity, its relationship with climate mitigation and adaptation and the potential use for nature-based solutions. The Committee looks forward to discussing these and related matters with our stakeholders.”

The Joint Committee on Climate Action has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
