Justice Committee to discuss Pre-legislative scrutiny of the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2020

The Joint Committee on Justice will meet with stakeholders tomorrow, Tuesday, 18 May, to discuss Pre-legislative scrutiny of the general scheme of the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2020.

  • Representatives from The Bar of Ireland
  • Dr Patrick O’Brien, Senior Lecturer in Law at the Oxford Brookes University
  • Dr Laura Cahillane, Senior Lecturer in the School of Law, University of Limerick
  • Dr Tom Hickey, Assistant Professor in the School of Law Government, DCU
  • Dr David Kenny, Assistant Professor in the School of Law, Trinity College Dublin

The meeting at 3:30 pm will be broadcast from Committee Room 1 of Leinster House.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy James Lawless said: “Tomorrow’s discussion on the Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of this very important piece of draft legislation is vital.  We will hear from the Law Society of Ireland and The Bar of Ireland and representatives from four universities including Oxford Brookes in the UK. The meeting will focus on some key issues including Membership of the Judicial Appointments Commission; Merit-Based Judicial Recommendations; Judiciary Diversity; and the Senior Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee. The Committee and I welcome robust conversations around these topics with the representatives.”

The Joint Committee on Justice has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
