Committee of Public Accounts to examine 2019 Financial Statements of Tax Appeals Commission

7 Iúil 2021, 16:00

The Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 8 July, to examine the 2019 Financial Statements of the Tax Appeals Commission.

The meeting at 9.30am will be broadcast from Committee Room 3 of Leinster House and will also examine Chapter 14 of the Comptroller and Auditor General’s 2019 report, which concerns the management of tax appeals.

The meeting will hear from the C&AG, Seamus McCarthy, followed by representatives of the Tax Appeals Commission led by the Chairperson, Marie-Claire Maney.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Stanley said: “The Tax Appeals Commission was established in 2016 to manage and make determinations on appeals from taxpayers who are dissatisfied with a tax assessment or decision made by Revenue. At the end of 2019, there were 3,357 open appeals that had a value of €3.8billion. The average time that the cases had been under appeal at that date was two years, while almost a quarter of cases had been in the appeal system three years or more. The Committee looks forward to discussing this caseload, the procurement of a new case management system, and the impact of Covid-19 on the work of the Commission.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas.ie.

PAC is a standing committee of Dáil Éireann which focuses on ensuring public services are run efficiently and achieve value for money.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
