Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine to discuss canine welfare matters and meet with new CEO of Greyhound Racing Ireland

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will meet this evening for separate engagements on canine welfare matters and with the new CEO of Rásaíocht Con Éireann / Greyhound Racing Ireland.

The meeting at 5.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be split into two sessions:

  • 5.30pm-7pm – Dog Breeding Establishments Act 2010 and Control of Dogs Act 1986, with officials from the Department of Rural and Community Development.
  • 7pm-8.30pm – Engagement with Ms Dearbhla O’Brien, CEO, on the Strategic Priorities for Rásaíocht Con Éireann / Greyhound Racing Ireland.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Jackie Cahill said: “In our first session, the Committee will continue its examination of dog breeding and canine welfare by reviewing current legislation in these areas with the Department of Rural and Community Development, which has responsibility for these matters.

“The Committee will then meet with the new CEO of Rásaíocht Con Éireann / Greyhound Racing Ireland to discuss her strategic priorities for the role of body that operates Ireland’s greyhound racing sector. We look forward to a wide-ranging discussion with Ms O’Brien about her vision for the sector for her term of office.”

The Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
