23 Beal 2023, 15:30

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, 24 May, for a discussion on Authorised Push Payment (APP) Fraud with representatives from Banking and Payments Federation of Ireland.

Ahead of the meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House, Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy John McGuinness said: “The Committee will meet with representatives of the Banking Payments Federation in the first of a series of meeting on Authorised Push Payment Fraud.

“APP Fraud is a type of fraud where a fraudster uses several sophisticated techniques to trick victims into making real-time payments to transfer funds directly into the fraudster’s bank account. There has been a significant increase in cases of APP Fraud in recent years with an estimated €16.8 million lost in 2021.

"Members will discuss the prevalence of APP Fraud in Ireland, customer protection and reimbursement, the policies of financial services and online platforms and the current regulatory system. The Committee looks forward to a wide-ranging and informative discussion with the representatives of the Banking Payments Federation on this and related matters.”

The Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
