20 Samh 2023, 16:10

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, 21 November, to resume consideration of the Citizens' Assembly report on the Directly Elected Mayor of Dublin with representatives of the Citizens Assembly.

The meeting at 3pm in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will hear from:

  • Mr Jim Gavin, former Chair of the Dublin Citizens’ Assembly;
  • Mr Art O’Leary, former Secretary to the Dublin Citizens’ Assembly;
  • Dr Bríd Quinn and Professor Deric O’Broin, members of the Expert Advisory Group;
  • Ms Nicole O’Connor, member of the Citizens’ Assembly.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Steven Matthews said: “In its report the Citizens’ Assembly recommended to the Government and the Oireachtas the creation of a new directly elected Mayor and local government structures for Dublin. The Committee has previously discussed the report and recommendations with members of the Eastern and Midlands Regional Authority including the four Dublin local authorities, Transport for Ireland, and representatives of Dublin, Fingal, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and South Dublin Chambers and Public Participation Networks.

“We now look forward to discussing the report with members of the Dublin Citizens’ Assembly who examined the matter, including the former Chair, Jim Gavin. The Committee is particularly interested in discussing the roles and powers of a directly-elected mayor, and the potential devolution of powers across a wide range of areas, including housing, planning, transport, primary and community healthcare, policing and emergency services, and tourism.”

The Joint Committee on Housing, Local Government and Heritage has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
