Committee of Public Accounts to examine the National Transport Authority’s 2022 Financial Statements

1 Beal 2024, 15:45

The Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 2 May, with representatives of the National Transport Authority (NTA) and officials from the Department of Transport to examine the NTA’s 2022 Financial Statements.

The meeting in Committee Room 3 of Leinster House will be joined by the C&AG, Seamus McCarthy, representatives of the NTA, led by Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer, and Department officials.

During the afternoon session, beginning at 1.30pm, the Committee will consider correspondence and other business of the Committee.

PAC Cathaoirleach Deputy Brian Stanley said: “The National Transport Authority is the statutory body under the aegis of the Department of Transport with responsibility for securing the provision of public passenger land transport services. Using Public Service Obligation payments, NTA subvents bus and rail services through public bodies such as Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus and Iarnród Éireann, and certain private sector service providers.

“The NTA’s income in 2022 amounted to €1.7 billion, up from €1.5 billion in 2021. This is made up of Oireachtas grants from Vote 31 Transport which was €1.5 billion in 2022, grant from Vote 37 Social Protection which was €1.5million and other income including fare revenue which totalled €252 million in 2022. NTA expenditure in 2022 totalled €1.67 billion, up from €1.4 billion in 2021.

“Key issues for the Committee include delivery of the BusConnects network redesign in Dublin and Cork, updates on the Metrolink and Dart+ rail projects, implementation of the Connecting Ireland rural mobility plan, and delivery of new walking and cycling schemes under the Active Travel programme.

“Other matters of interest are managing the reliability and punctuality of public transport services, the purchase of buses for companies that are providing public transport services, the provision of bus stops and bus shelters, recruitment of drivers, reduced fares and fleet management.

“The Committee welcomes this engagement with the NTA and looks forward to examining the Authority’s 2022 financial statements, these important issues and related matters with Ms Graham and her colleagues.”

The meeting in Committee Room 3 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.

PAC is a standing committee of Dáil Éireann which focuses on ensuring public services are run efficiently and achieve value for money. Further information on the role and remit of the Committee can be found here.
